Moles, also known as nevi, are common skin growths that develop when pigment cells (melanocytes) cluster together. They can vary in size, shape, and color, and typically appear during childhood or adolescence. While most moles are harmless, it’s important to monitor them for any changes, as some may develop into skin cancer.
Moles come in a variety of types, including congenital moles (present at birth), acquired moles (developing later in life), and atypical moles (larger and irregular in shape). They can be flat or raised, smooth or rough, and range in color from pink and tan to brown and black. Some moles may even have hair growing from them.
Electrocautery is a medical technique that uses an electrical current to heat and destroy tissue. In the context of mole removal, a fine-tipped electrode is used to carefully burn away the mole tissue. This technique is often preferred for smaller, superficial moles due to its precision and minimal scarring.
When performed by a qualified dermatologist or skin specialist, electrocautery is a safe and effective method for mole removal. It’s generally well-tolerated, with minimal discomfort and a quick recovery time. However, as with any medical procedure, there are potential risks, such as infection, scarring, or changes in skin pigmentation. Your dermatologist will discuss these risks with you during your consultation.
